Kolkata Trip | Things to do in Kolkata / Calcutta | West Bengal

The marvelous city Kolkata in the Eastern State of India, West Bengal, has not only been of historical importance for Indians but also a main hub during British rule (East India Company). My Kolkata Trip and cities nearby, Howrah, covered both aspects of these cities.

Walking around the streets gives a European feel because of the construction from the British rule . From street lamps to huge buildings like Victoria Palace, Birla Planetarium, etc. to the famous Howrah bridge. The city has a different feel compared to the typical Indian cities.

The first master piece I choose to mention is Victoria Memorial, situated in Kolkata on the bank of Hoogly river, near JL Nehru Road. It was constructed in the early 20th Century on the death of Queen Victoria. It is a beautiful memorial made entirely of White Makrana Marble (inspired by Taj Mahal).

The another one, that connects Kolkata/ formerly Calcutta to the second largest city, Howrah, in West Bengal, is the Howrah Bridge. It is an important transportation hub of West Bengal and a major gateway for Kolkata. The bridge is constructed to cross the river Ganges. The also another option to reach the opposite side of the river, by steamer.

Now thrid place to visit in Kolkata is solely for entertainment, The Nicco Park. An amusement park, located in the salt lake city, with all kinds of rides. This park was created to attract tourists to the state by providing family-friendly recreation as well as educative entertainment.

The another place important not only for the state but the entire country is the Science Centre in Kolkata, the biggest Science park in India,  located at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. It is extremly vast, creative & educational. It even has a small ride “Evolution Park” which is a boat ride in a cave that takes the passengers through a series of evolution models, from Jurrasic era to the modern era. Also has a small ropeway/cablecars aswell.

Now every Indian knows how popular and of importance is Godess Durga and Her Temples are in West Bengal. Two of which are Dakshineshwar Kali Temple, a Hindu temple located in Dakshineswar near Kolkata, situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. The other popular one is Kali Ghat Kali Temple, another of the Hindu temple of high importance, because it is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. Unfortunately I couldn’t take any pictures on my Kolkata Trip of these two as photography and filming is strictly prohibited in Temples (read Vaishno Devi Blog).

I visited another interesting place called Birla Planetarium and watched a complete show at night. It is very close to the Victoria Memorial. Also there are number of museums in the city, I couldn’t visit all of them. But someday I would like to visit all of them and write in detail about most of them.

Because the city is situated along side the Bay of Bengal, seafood is really popular in Bengali dishes. The most popular festival in West Bengal is Durga Puja, celebrated prewinters. The dates may vary. It may be difficult to travel freely and fastly during this festival, but Durga Puja sure is a worth visit. Also during the rainy season , the Kolkata Trip is not that worthy, because this place gets hugely effected by monsoon winds coming from the Bay of Bengal.
